Planned Maintenance of M25 Bridge over Railway Line Between Farningham Road and Swanley Stations
Wilmington Parish Council
I’m writing to inform you that we’ll soon be carrying out maintenance work to the bridge which carries the M25 over the railway line between Farningham Road station and Swanley station. To ensure the continued safety and reliability of the bridge, we’ll replace a bridge expansion joint which is reaching the end of its serviceable life.
To ensure safety, the M25 between junctions 2 and 3, will be closed overnight on weekdays, from 10pm to 5.30am between Monday 9 February and Saturday 7 March. Each closure will begin in the evening and be lifted the following morning. These works will not be carried out on Saturday or Sunday nights.
- The northbound carriageway, including the M25 junction 3 entry slip road and the M20 to M25 northbound link road, will be closed from Monday 9 February to Saturday 21 February
- The southbound carriageway, including the M25 junction 2 entry slip road, will be closed from Monday 23 February to Saturday 7 March.
Diversion information
- M25 northbound (anticlockwise)
A clearly signed diversion route will be in place each night. Traffic will be directed onto the M20 westbound to junction 4, the A228 northbound to the Merrals Shaw Interchange to join the M2. Drivers will then merge onto the London‑bound A2 before rejoining the M25 at the junction 2 Darenth Interchange.
- M25 southbound (clockwise)
A clearly signed diversion route will be in place each night. Traffic will be directed from the M25 at the Darenth Interchange onto the A2 coastbound, continuing to join the M2. Drivers will then exit the M2 at junction 2 and follow the route to the Merrals Shaw Interchange, A228 southbound to the M20 at junction 4 and following the M20 westbound to the M25 junction 3 Swanley interchange,
Additional information
The existing expansion joint is over 15 years old and reaching the end of its serviceable life. The new expansion joint is expected to last for approximately 15 years, helping to keep the bridge safe for future use and reducing the number of closures needed for maintenance.
