Did you know that The Retreat on the High Road, built between 1851 and 1872 as homes for 'distressed stock market gentlemen'!!. The individula houses were never used for this purpose. instead they were firstly the homes of 'distressed governesses and then,from 1921 for farm workers.

If you want to know more interesting or quirky facts about Wilmington why not visit the Heritage Centre which is housed in the annexe to Wilmington Memorial Centre on High Road.

In the Centre you will find -

  • a growing collection of local memorabilia
  • the history of Wilmington and its residents
  • the history of St Michaels and All Angels Church and Church records
  • old postcards, maps, newspaper cuttings and many artefacts

The Centre is open on the first Thursday and second Saturday of every month between 10:00 and noon. If you go on a Thursday why not also pop into the Memorisl Hall and visit the Country Market.

The Centre is always interested in hearing residents' reminineces of a time gone by in Wilmington and receiving photographs, maps and articles that are of relevance to the local history or character of the Village - of particular interest following the sale of The Rosemary Centre, is anything to do with the building when it was the Village School,
